The integration of smart home technology has been a growing trend, and in 2024, it’s reaching new heights. Home automation is becoming seamlessly integrated into interior design, offering not only convenience but also a futuristic aesthetic. If you have been following our blog for a while, you’ll know that we have been championing Biophilic design for some time. Biophilic design, centred around the connection between nature and human spaces, continues to gain momentum in 2024. Expect to see an influx of indoor greenery, natural materials, and designs that mimic the organic patterns found in nature. Creating spaces that promote well-being and environmental consciousness we will see more living walls, indoor gardens, and sustainable materials such as bamboo and cork.
We fully expect to find some innovations and hopefully, lots of interesting and new products at The Surface Design Show in February. Many of the awards finalists are showing biophilic design in action – The Woven House by Giles Miller Studio is one such example. A stunning design that encapsulates its surroundings beautifully and invites nature to grow up the outside of the house whilst also being visible within it. Truly stunning.
The Vintage Revival – seen in Interior Design 3D rendering
Nostalgia takes centre stage as vintage aesthetics become even more popular this year. 3D rendering Interior Design enthusiasts can expect to see a resurgence of retro furniture, classic colour palettes, and timeless pieces that evoke a sense of comfort and familiarity. Mixing vintage elements with modern touches creates a unique and personalised look that celebrates the best of both worlds. We’ll see the tech revolution here with smart living merging the past with the future.
Inspired by classic literature with a touch of mystery and blending sophistication with a hint of nostalgia Dark Academia is a by-trend of this is. In fact, as a trend, it has been around for a while but it will continue to grow in many residential settings. Very popular on social channels, it’s hard to pass a day on Instagram without seeing a fabulously decorated office or decadent sitting room.
Part of the appeal is the quirkiness and freedom of expression associated with these styles. Finding something in a vintage store with a story, that speaks to you gives depth and personality to interiors in 2024. It also leads on nicely to the next growing trend.
Sustainable Chic –
Another ‘trend’ we’ve been behind for a while. With a growing emphasis on environmental responsibility, sustainable and eco-friendly design choices are becoming more prevalent. Recycled materials, upcycled furniture, and energy-efficient appliances are finding their way into homes. Sustainable chic is not just a trend; it’s a commitment to creating spaces that minimise the ecological footprint while still exuding style and sophistication.
In our blog recently we discussed how sustainable design is the future and explained the four pillars of sustainability. For the consumer, this can be as simple as investing in LED lighting, and smart thermostats and using materials such as wood, bamboo and cork within the home.
For commercial developments, there is so much more to consider including how a building will be heated, reducing waste on-site and aiming for net zero carbon emissions.
Maximalism Returns with a Twist
While minimalism has had its time in the spotlight, maximalism is once again making a comeback in 2024 but with a contemporary twist. Perhaps it’s that people are tiring of the subtle tones of mid-century rooms and want something more unique and colourful.
Bold patterns, vibrant colours, and eclectic combinations of textures are the hallmarks of this trend. The key is to strike a balance between excess and cohesion, creating visually stimulating spaces that showcase individuality and personality.
Artisanal Craftsmanship – design trends and 3D rendering
Handcrafted and artisanal elements are gaining popularity as a reaction to mass-produced, cookie-cutter designs. Unique, one-of-a-kind pieces created by skilled craftsmen add a touch of authenticity and warmth to interiors. Whether it’s hand-painted tiles, custom furniture, or bespoke textiles, the emphasis is on the artistry and craftsmanship behind each element.
Tying in the other trends we’re seeing either coming through or growing stronger this year, we can see this trend in particular gathering momentum. Vintage finds brought back to life, making use of what is there already is a key element to this. Finding the beauty in a piece of furniture that is hand-made, understanding the history of how things were created in the past and investing in new one-off bespoke pieces that will last.
Colour Me Happy; 3D rendering and design trends
We can’t share a trend piece without discussing how colour is influencing design in 2024. Back in September, Dulux announced its colour of the year as Sweet Embrace – A gentle blossom pink. A grown-up sophisticated pink, it is soft and versatile. We saw Dulux pair it with soft greens and blues alongside punchier olive and petrol blue to create a calm colour palette. As well as with terracotta, ochres and taupes to bring a warm colour story. Surprisingly versatile, this pink takes on different tones in different lights, bringing warmth to north-facing spaces and softness to sunlit rooms.
Pantone Colour Institute’s colour of the year is always eagerly anticipated. This year it gave us Pantone 13-1023 Peach Fuzz. Which they told us, is “a colour that captures our desire to nurture ourselves and others.”
It’s a very gentle peach tone “whose all-embracing spirit enriches mind, body and soul” according to Pantone’s press release at the time. It sits somewhere between pink and orange and is – much like Dulux – drawing on the call for calm, warm and gentle interiors whilst also offering options to add impact when paired with bolder colours.
Interestingly, Benjamin Moore went for a more intense, but equally as nurturing colour for its Colour of the year. “Inspired by the brilliance of a new star formed in space” Blue Nova is a saturated, vibrant blend of blue and violet. Whilst a much stronger colour – not too dark, not too light, but strong enough to hold its own in a design – it still echoes that warmth and assurance that both Pantone and Dulux have given us with their colours.
What the interior designers are saying about Interior Design trends
Designer Joanne Jeyes, of Crocus Interior Design agrees – “nurturing colours are high on the list when helping clients choose colours for their homes. Deep blues and greens that cocoon a room have been popular for a while, as have richer reds and now the softer, pinkier tones as well.
“I’m also seeing a return to the warmth of browns. Bitter chocolate, softer tan and taupe neutrals offer exciting and grounding colour palettes. It harks backwards slightly – which is also a reflection of how we are feeling – but is brought bang up to date by avoiding colour clashes (so no orange and brown a la Austin Powers) and instead, opting for monochromatic schemes.”
Kitchen trends to watch out for:
As the heart of the home, the kitchen is always a key element of any design. It’s no surprise that the kitchen trends for 2024 also reflect the general interior design trends. Natural materials – lots of warm woods, stone and marble – and warm colours. Green will continue to be a popular choice and those pinks and browns are going to creep in too.
Look out for huge swathes of marble featured in top-designer kitchens. Slab backsplashes are popular, creating a seamless link between the wall and the countertop. Marble countertops (or a more affordable quartz or stone effect) are everywhere and we especially like the stronger vein examples that are around. We have also spotted porcelain as a material to use on countertops. Durable and easy to clean, it makes sense.
Whilst kitchen islands are going nowhere, they are developing a new feel – and function. Less of a ‘bar’ or place to gather, they are now becoming more functional. You’ll see more storage underneath them as well as more seating at and around them.
Another big trend in kitchen design is bespoke coffee stations – who doesn’t have a coffee machine that needs its own home? From stations that incorporate fridges, and small sinks and show off your ‘all bells and whistles’ machine, to discreet hideaway-style cupboards that will banish the clutter with a quick close of a door.
Secondary Spaces
Finally ‘back’ kitchens or ‘secondary spaces’ as they have been called – as well as the pantry will be buzzwords this year. Again, harking back to a bygone day but without the ‘them and us’ feel. What was once a simple utility room housing a sink and the washing machine is now also a prep area and somewhere to hide away the less attractive elements of a kitchen.
These secondary spaces will be hidden behind secret doors, or they simply lead off the main kitchen. Either way, they will be separated. As for the Instagram obsession with a pantry – these are becoming more considered – some would say elaborate, with ladders, clever storage and better use of space with floor-to-ceiling cabinetry.
Oh, and they will also be given a style overhaul with more colour used in them – perhaps two-tone cabinets or the interiors on show painted a different colour to the cabinets. We fully expect to be showcasing some amazing wallpaper designs within spaces like this in our 3d renders for sure. So whilst they may be ‘secondary’ they are still stylish.

So as you can see, there are some exciting trends to look out for in 2024. As well as some comfort in what we know and love – and need. A harmonious blend of nature, technology, nostalgia, sustainability, and individual expression is shaping the way our living spaces look and feel.
